I dont like either but at least Smith looked and acted slightly more Doctor-ish than Tennant. Both eras had their fair share of stinkers.

Matt Smith. Both had two great series, but I think Smith's best (5) is better than Tennant's. Also Tennant's worst series arguably hit greater lows with Love and Monsters and New Earth.
Meanwhile as Monster pointed out Smith was more Doctorish too and in contrast could have saved the show as he brought it to a point where Capaldi was cast. (Sadly as we know Moff threw that away with both hands because some people called him sexist.)

I'm kind of bored of the RTD era. Some of the episodes weren't as good as I originally thought they were and Series 4 is beyond unwatchable for me. Series 2 is a real dark period for the series with The Idiot's Latern, Love and Monsters and Fear Her being almost unacceptable bad. Two of them are extremely mean-spirited too. On the opposite of that, I've been throughly enjoying the latter half of Series 7 this weekend. Do I dare and give Day of the Doctor another go?

"Smith was more Doctorish too"When I first saw Matt Smith, I was convinced that we finally had a proper, traditional, eccentric Doctor. I also believed Moffat would deliver a show that would go from strength to strength, pleasing older fans and the younger generation. Wrong again...

To be fair that IS what he did for a few years at least, but sadly he was scared that doing that would make him look sexist.

Matt's biggest drawback is his lack of gravitas. He can't be authoritative to save his life, whereas Tennant can be downright psycho if he wants.

Hmm.. the problem for me was - Matt's best performance was in 'The Eleventh Hour' - he was never as good as that again, and his first year was his best. After that, he became more a caricature of himself (plus his hair got shorter and less Doctor-ish ) and unfortunately, Moffat's writing deteriorated, becoming increasingly derivative. Worst of all, I quickly realized that the Moffat era wasn't as radically different from the Davies years as I would have liked. New boss, (almost) the same as the old boss.
