I much prefer reading a good book with the telly on in background. I can watch certain movies when I'm in the mood, but most of them either bore me or cause me to become restless these days. Reading helps to relax me and I can do it at my own pace.

I've found that I've been reading more than watching either tv or movies in the last few years.

I've found that I've been reading more than watching either tv or movies in the last few years. A book - a good old-fashioned, second hand, yellowing book - can take me away from not just staring at screens all day but is a quiet reminder that we don't have to be slaves to Insta, FaceTime, Twitter and all that other nonsense all the time.

Yeah, I discovered my love of reading again a few years ago. It's also liberating to rediscover that an internet screen doesn't contain ALL knowledge or content too.

I was a member of a book club for a couple of years recently. We read everything from feminist literature like The Handmaids Tale to sci-fi classics like 1984, to lesser-known Thomas Hardy novels and stories such as The Book Thief which have gone into my collection. It's like the argument against Citizen Kane ever being remade - for everything we gain over time something gets taken away, a certain magic. And enjoying an old book is like that, I think - finding a different kind of magic.

I've just finished reading the recent graphic novel "The V.C.'s" book from the 2000AD Ultimate Collection. I remember reading the original story back in the early 80's, but hadn't read any of the more recent continuations (also included) which were a fun revelation. I remember when first seeing the "Starship Troopers" film in the early 90's thinking how many elements were similar to "The VC's" (Vietnam type call-up/training/US militarism similarities/ insectoid type adversary/ Rookie who loses his folks his a devastating attack on earth etc), but upon reading the notes in this edition it seems "The V.C.'s" was actually part inspired by Robert A. Heinlein's original 1959 novel! I still think 2000AD had a huge influence on the movie mind you, because of the Robocop-esque self parodic tone of the thing.
