2008 - 2009: this period of NuWho looked particularly tired and washed-out. All four are utter shite but I have a special loathing for 'The Next Doctor' - it started reasonably well (David Morrissey's fake Doctor looked and acted like a proper Doctor - well, certainly more than Tennant's ever did), and I usually like stuff set in the Victorian age, but after Jackson Lake's big reveal, the whole thing degenerated into sickly, mawkish nonsense. I'd had more than enough of Tennant's goofiness by this stage and The Cyber-King scenes were painfully embarrassing to watch.

Waters of Mars I feel is a classic and certainly set The Doctor on an interesting path leading into the final two specials...so of course RTD and company demonstrate little to no respect for the attention span and intelligence of the audience and swiftly ignore it, turning Ten into a mawkish, tantrum throwing child who suddenly decides simple people aren't important and regeneration is more a vanity death sentence than a fresh start.

The outcome of this poll makes me laugh. "There have been 26 votes by 13 voters". End of Time happened to score 11 votes. 85% of those who voted think it's deserving of a vote. I'm assuming those who didn't vote for it only voted for one (or two) of the stories listed, so it'd probably be voted in by 100% of members otherwise. And that's with something as crap as Planet of the Dead as part of this selection of stories.

Sad to see the Next Doctor so disliked. I love it. It's tremendous fun and the Cyber Kaiju is badass. I just wish it had got a fight with the Skarasen or the Moffat era T-Rex. It's not as bad as Planet of the Dead. It does have its moments of stupidity though, despite the first half being promising. For starters, why the bloody hell would Cybermen hire children as part of their workforce? Why would they need to adhere to traditional methods of industrial labour? They never get tired as it is- why don't they just do it themselves? And that's not to mention how disappointing the second half of the episode is. I enjoyed David Morrisey during the first half and thought the narrative surrounding his character was one of its strong points, but they completely discard that after the 35 minute mark when they could have done so much more with it. Having said that, it's got far more going for it than Planet of the Dead. As UncleDeadly once put it, that's an example of utter fokking mindless shit. One of the most shallow yet simultaneously boring stories NuWho ever put out.

I’d have far more respect for this era if they had had the guts to follow up, instead they render that last little evil diatribe utterly pointless. The era should have either followed up on the conclusion of Waters of Mars properly, or alternatively, Adelaide should have shot the Tenth Doctor on the spot, with him subsequently dying in a moment of hubris and selfishness as opposed to heroism. I would have very likely respected that creative decision a hell of a lot more than the indulgently grandiose awfulness of his actual regeneration. It would at least encourage the audience to question the Tenth Doctor properly as opposed to making him a christ figure all the time. It's still somewhat grandiose courtesy of the era it happens to be part of, but it's far more interesting than lavishing praise on your central character and having him see each and every one of his past companions.
