The missing episodes of The Underwater Menace are receiving the animated treatment.
It's an easy choice, given the comparative lack of effort (two episodes) required relative to prior releases. On the plus side, I can't see it being remotely as bad as the reconstructions inserted on the 2014 DVD.

for some reason, they also animated the existing episodes? Jesus Christ what a waste of time and money! Daleks Masterplan is left unfinished, but they animate two we already have?

for some reason, they also animated the existing episodes? Bizarrely, this has been the case for every animated release since The Faceless Ones. I suppose they intend on maintaining consistency (and you can opt for the surviving episodes anyway), but I don't know who'd prefer to watch an animation when the real thing exists. I'm watching these not because the animation is in any way impressive, but because they're all we have. Why would I opt for a stilted recreation over the real thing? They have tight budgets anyway. If they only worked on the episodes which needed animating, it would make the process that much more cost-effective. Imagine how arduous it'd be to animate 12 episodes when getting to The Daleks' Master Plan.

It is what it is, I suppose. As Bernard says, it can't be any worse than the utterly lazy reconstruction with no captions. I like this story a lot so I'll happily get this one.

So The Mirror was right - they said this and Smugglers were being done back in January. Smugglers looks a certainty now then. I agree that I'm baffled by them still animating existing eps - this and the colour were allegedly the order of BBC America, who are supposedly no longer funding them so why are we still doing this? - and I'm irritated by them only putting the surviving eps on the recons disc, so in order to watch the originals with the b&w animation you have to start changing discs (!) but the animation looks okay and I'm glad they're coming back.

I still think The Invasion one was the best. It retained the mysteriousness and style of the serial which made it less jarring following on from the existing episodes.

Apparently the press release made a mistake and the existing eps are on the same disc as the black and white animation (either that or fan backlash has made them backtrack super-quick, you decide).

Thank goodness for that. I'm ok with cheap animation, but I draw the line not being able to watch the existing episodes along side them. If the episodes exist I would 100% rather watch them.

My TUM arrived today. Anyone seen this? Yes, and sadly I didn't enjoy it very much. The animation style is stiff and unimaginative and I've never been a fan of this watery tale (possibly Troughton's worse). Still, there's some nice extras on the set and you can always watch the Recon version of The Underwater Menace , if you have a problem with the animation.

I'm sorry but as a Classic Who fan these animations are borderline embarrassing. It really just is the lowest possible effort they could put into it, it's like Flash animation. They actually make the show seem cheaper than it was, which is an achievement. I'm kind of glad they're not being included much in the iPlayer catalogue, because it could seriously put exploring fans off.

I'm kind of glad they're not being included much in the iPlayer catalogue, because it could seriously put exploring fans off. The style of the Moonbase and the Reign of Terror was better. They did reuse certain animations a fair few times in both of them, and Reign of Terror has some weird editing, but they look far better and more realistic than these new ones. They do seem to fit in far better with the original episodes than some of these newer ones.
The reason they are animating the existing episodes is primarily to have a consistent product. People may prefer they didn't, but if they need to animate all the episodes to make it a viable product then its fine by me. I would always watch the original episodes before an animation, but I can see why for a four parter they would want to just animate the entire thing. They already have the character models/backgrounds and etc for the missing episodes so its cheaper to animate the existing episodes than it would be to animate two other missing stories.
