Which actor did you prefer in the role?
Tennant for me. Barring Whittaker, Eccleston is my least favourite actor to portray the character. Pretty much everything about the 9th Doctor put me off. At least Tennant, who I do have issues with as well, is slightly more Doctor-like.

I rank them both very highly as dramatic actors. Eccleston has more gravitas and Tennant is more flexible, but it's very hard to say one is better than the other. I might personally prefer Eccleston slightly more, at least in the part of the Doctor. I like it when the Doctor wields authority.

Tennant. He was more enthusiastic, had better stories on average, and yes did feel more Doctorish. I feel Tennant could have been a decent classic era type Doctor with different scripts, and in all fairness did define the character for a new generation.
Eccelston was miscast in every way, but to be fair it is hard to judge as he hated the material he had. Maybe with different material he could have been great, but honestly I just think he doesn't really fit the Doctor, as he's too intense, but in the wrong way.
Having said that though I do like Eccelston a lot as an actor. i was reminded of how good he was in a rewatch of 28 days later and believe it or not he does comedy well too. He was hilarious in Brian Pern, which is one of the most underrated comedy series of the last few years.
Still again he's not an ideal choice for the role, though admittedly Ten Inch wasn't either.

As much as I've come to lowth this era, Tennent is the better of the two. There's a reason nuwho can't get out from his shadow.

It's like choosing between dumb and dumber.

Both were awful, but if I'm pressed, then it'd have to be Tennant. Eccelston was completely unsuitable - he seemed to have no idea about the role, didn't look the part and isn't a particularly outstanding actor. Plus, he moans a lot about stuff, which gets boring after a while.
I don't like any of the NuWho lot - there were rare, odd moments when Capaldi almost came close to my idea of how the Doctor should be, but mostly they all failed miserably.
