They need to do away with it. Let the Doctor use his wits to get out of a situation. It's funny for all people say JNT was gimmicky, question mark lapels, stunt casting etc. He did away with the biggest gimmick the show ever had. That said however I don't think the sonic is necessarily bad when it comes to some things. IE getting out of locked rooms or maybe helping him now and again rewrite some equipment is fine. Using it as an offensive weapon like New Who is stupid. I honestly think that New Who is so reliant on the sonic because the doctor doesn't fight or use violence as much anymore. When you watch Old Who, all of the Doctors would punch people, throw them over their shoulders, hit them over the head (except for Troughton.) Not saying the Doctor was an action hero, but in close quarters he could defend himself. In New Who he almost never does. Can you think of any instance where Tennant threw a punch? I think Eccelston did once, and Matt once. Peter did a few times, which was apparently on his absolute insistence. He wanted his Doctor to be like Jon Pertwee and Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. IE the old guy you don't think looks very tough, but is because of all the years of experience. Still even then they are few and far between. It's funny because it's not like Old Who had more action because it cast more conventional action leads. I'd say it cast guys less likely to do that LOL. Hartnell was old and sick, Troughton was small and out of shape a bit, Pertwee similarly much older, and McCoy stood five foot 6! It might be because they are scared of a Mary Whitehouse situation popping up again I don't know? Still the downside is that now the Sonic has taken the place of Venusian Akido and slugging someone in the face like Tom used too LOL.

remember when Tom snapped some dude's neck in Seeds of Doom lmao Actually he didn't snap his neck. That is just a bit of clever editing. The guy lived after that it was meant to be some kind of vulcan neck pinch thing, but looked like a neck break and became a beloved meme. Things Tom HAS done however. Thrown a bad guy into a meat grinder. Poisoned Solon. Switched off Davros's life support machine. Thrown a poisonous bug onto someone's shoulder. (Even Leela who enjoyed killing things was pretty shocked at that.) Beat a henchman up so badly he ended up severely concussed. Tripped a bad guy up with his scarf and down a cliff. Robot punched a bad guy into chemicals that ate his face.

Travelling with Leela alone makes him stand apart from the later Doctors. Tennant got incredibly upset whenever companions did anything remotely ruthless
