Anybody watch this show?
I just started it this week and I'm already on season 2. It was brought to my attention by Claudia Boleyn. She didn't recommend it to me personally LOL, I just saw her go on about it and I thought well why not try something that's out of my wheelhouse for a change. As much as I like her personally, we have a slightly different taste in tv.
It's really good. It's not the most original idea. It's basically just the X-Men with much more overt sci fi, fantastical elements woven into its premise. The fact that they have Elliot Page who was in the X-Men movies just makes the similarities all the more striking, though this time Elliot plays Big Fam's part to be fair. Still it would be like me doing a Buffy expy with James Marsters as the old librarian mentor LOL.
Still overall it's a really well made, well done show with some great stories and characters. I understand that it was based on a comic book, but I'm afraid I've never read it.
Honestly of the three live action takes on the idea of a school of strange mutants with weird powers, X-Men, Doom Patrol and this, Umbrella Academy could be the best. Doom Patrol had a good first season and then went off the rails completely. X-Men meanwhile was up and down. The best bits of it like Logan are better than the best of Umbrella Academy, but the worst like Deadpool is far worse than the worst of Umbrella Academy.
So far I'd give it a 7/10. Definitely above average in its scripts and actors, but concept is still a little bit well trodden at this point. It gets a bit woke in its second season. NOT for having LGBT or minority leads who were there from the start, but it focuses a bit more on the civil rights movement in the 60s. Again though it's hard to say. I hate that all these badly done woke things like Jodie have made it that we can't have anything show how bad things were in the 60s. In this case though ultimately I didn't mind it.
My fave character is definitely Klaus. It's funny because he annoyed me in the pilot, but by the third he was the one I enjoyed watching the most. The Handler meanwhile is an excellent villain. Both outrageously camp and menacing at the same time.
