Rewatched the Scream Movies recently so I though I’d give my ranking of them.
1. Scream 2 - I feel this movie did everything better then the first. The caste all feel much more fleshed out then in the first, and I cared more about the side characters more here then in any other film. Sidney character growth through the film is very welcome. Ghostface is probably at his most genuinely intimidating, as he comes across as almost omnipresent at times. I also liked who the killers turned out to be, though my wife didn’t. There are also a lot good scenes like Sidney’s panic attack on stage. A rare case of the sequel being better then the original.
2. Scream - a great film that birthed a new era of horror, for better and worse, I do feel that it’s not quite as ahead of the curve as some say. I could argue, that it’s a pretty basic slasher at its core, but it’s new stuff helps give it its own character. The caste, while good, are all sadly at their most basic here and aside from Sidney none of them really stand out. The idea behind Ghostface is a stroke of genius, a more realistic take on a slasher villain, and Billy appears genuinely unhinged. I’m a bit 50/50 on the films constant references to the wider slasher genre as it feels a bit like filler at times.
3. Scream 4 - This was a hard pick but 4 wins out thanks to its ending. The rest of the film is a very competent slasher but without that inspired ending it really would stand apart much. The idea of Sidney’s cousin wanting to kill her in order to steal her glory as a “Final Girl” was amazing and part of me wish’s they’d actually followed through with that but the ending we got is very gripping as Sidney has never been more vulnerable then she was in that hospital.
4. Scream 3 - Not a bad film in any way but feels like it was grasping a straws to create a big finally. While I take my hat off to the character growth of the main leads, the rest of the caste are just twats you want to die. I will also say this film really should have killed one of the main three by this point, even in 4 I was was after that, as not only would it have helped the film stand out but given it stakes. The Ghostface of this film is also probably the weakest both as a character and their motivations. I feel too many hoops have to jumped through to get the unknown half brother killer along with him also being the true mastermind behind the first film. Because of this the film is s little hard to take seriously then the other three, but is still fun.
5. Scream 5 - Not completely awful but uninspired and resentful of the franchises fans, Scream 5 reminds me a little two much of Halloween Resurrection. A film made by people who don’t like this kind of film, or the people who watch it. The main caste are boring and contrived, the originals look bored, the killer is none of intreast. It’s sole blame to fame is the death of Dewey, but the character is so poorly treated and his death so telegraphed that it loses much of its impact. Had this been done in any of the prior 4 it would have been good, but here it feels like his death was done solely because they had nothing else they could do. A lesser film made by a lesser Hollywood.
