Die Hard 3 was pretty good, but you NEED to see the original deleted ending. The theatrical ending is a farce.
Die Hard 4 is probably my favourite sequel. I like seeing McClane struggle in the modern age and he has great chemistry with Justin Long.
Die Hard 5 is a travesty.
That being said, absolutely none of the sequels captured the "one man vs an army" aspect of the original. That awesome stealth element is completely missing in every other film.

The first. 3 is the only other decent one.

The first two are elite action movies. I'm not quite sure how Die Hard 4.0 is better than Die Hard 2, but to each their own. With a Vengeance is pretty good to be fair. I think Willis and Jackson play off each other well. I'd rate them like this:
Die Hard 10/10 Die Hard 2 9/10 With a Vengeance 8/10 4.0 6/10 A Good Day to Zzzzz 2/10

I don't think any Die Hard film recaptured the cat-and-mouse game that made the first film so good. The whole idea of "McClane trapped with X villains that he has to take out" is never utilised again in this franchise. I guess they wanted to raise the stakes, but in doing so, they lost what made that film iconic. Ironically, copycat films (thinking of Air Force One) probably did a better job using the formula.
So my opinion on the other films is just based on how much they entertained me. Die Hard 2 recaptured some of the original vibe, but it lacked an interesting villain and fun sidekick. Die Hard 3 had Irons and Jackson for these roles, but the plot was such a mess. Die Hard 4 has a pretty cool storyline and characters, hence I like that one the most out of all the followups.

4 is let down for me by Kevin Smith who I really can't stand.
