Now the subject of climate change is a big issue at the moment. Many people have opinions and there are idiots on both sides, but one thing I e noticed is that certain people who stand against climate extremists have taken to demonising animals.
I first came across this with Sargon talking about the Wolves of Paris. This was an event in 1450 in which a pack of wolves terrorised Paris one harsh winter. Now I’ve heard a few other being up event also as a argument against “rewilding”. Rewilding is in essence the idea of recreating natural ecosystems with the intention of improving the environment. The major sticking point of this is the reintroduction of predators to control prey populations. You can see why that is an issue, on the one hand they do a far better job then human ever do at keeping prey in check, but on the other they can present a possible threat to human life and livelihood.
Now I’m not going to pretend to have the answers on this issue, but one thing I will speak out about is ignorant people attempting to turn animal into demons to justify their side.
While I’m not overly familiar with the Wolves of Paris event, I have looked into man-eating animal behaviour.
Firstly there is nothing unnatural about a predator killing a human. That is nature, not some abortion. It is simply that many mammalian predators have learned to avoid human as a food source due to our actions against them throughout history. Many none mammal Carnivores like sharks and crocodiles do not possess that kind of brain power and will eat whatever is available, as will mammal predators from harsh, remote locations like Polar Bears and Leopard Seals. Yet none of this is out of malice, they just do what they have evolved to do.
Now man-eaters, as in mammal Carnivora who overcome their fear of man due to hunger, will occasionally occur due to old age, sickness or poor prey numbers due to natural events, but most arise from a combination of lack prey cause by humans and injuries cause by hunters.
Now I’m not going blame the people of a bygone era for what they did, they didn’t know any better, or for their fear of the creatures that stalked outside their homes, but I find it rather shocking that in this day and age, with all we have learned about animal behaviour, that some can so easily slip back into the persecution of predators just because it suits their agenda. I grew up in a world that was fighting tooth and nail to preserve many animal species from going extinct, and never did I once thing I’d live long enough to see such s massive step backwards in the western world.
