Who Are Your Faviort Sontarans

I've found myself warming more to the stocky warriors of late. So who are your main faviort 3?

Linx, the original and most balanced character wise. Both brutal and intelligent yet also providing some great humour throughout the Time Warrior, he's the reason I made this list a 3 part choice to prevent a landslide vote.

Styre, probably the most brutal Sontaran imo. His horrific experiments against his captives have a real impact even now and its little wonder it was the first Tom story to really poke the moral police.

Stor, the most accomplished. Despite my issues with the story itself, Stor has probably one of the single best feats of any tv Doctor Who villain. He  nearly brought Gallifrey to its knees with an very complex plan and no Time War in sight.

Stike, the...tall. I'm gonna have to confess I remember little of him. It's been years since I watched the Two Doctors and I recall little of him. Still he was lucky enough to be in a great story.

Staal, the imitator. A lesser version of greater commander stuck in poorly executed story.

Strax, the amusing. The only nuwho character that I actually find genuinely funny these day.

Skaak, the unknown. So named because I refused to watch anything from the Jodie era, looks a lot better then earlier nuwho Sontaran but has the misfortune of having a name that sounds like Skat.


So who do you like the most? I agree we've got a few filler picks here but while we may mock nuwho here, let it not be said we exclude it's supporters. 

For me is Linx, Styre and Stor. As much as I like ol' Strax, these three guys really are the Sontarans at their best.

Stike is pretty cool although hw doesn't do much in the actual story. I like the Sontaran that falls over a chair in The Invasion of Time lol

Styre: Represents the Sontarans at their most sadistic and cruel. Whereas Linx was an slightly more straightforward warrior, carrying out his plans with very little regard or care for the humans, Styre's psychotic glee is more disturbing and memorable.

Linx: His competence and intelligence is unrivalled and his straightforward no-nonsense personality makes for good comedy with his dynamic with Irongron and Bloodaxe whilst still making him intimidating enough to be taken seriously, but Styre narrowly edges him for the aforementioned reason above 

Stike: Yes, he's 6ft 2 and takes a backseat for most the story, mostly seen standing round barking orders at people but I still find him entertaining down to Clinton Greyn's OTT performance and his death is equal spades grim and darkly humorous. 

Storr: Arguably the most accomplished but Derek Deadman's performance is a bit monotone for my liking and his defeat is an anti-climax.

Staal: The design is too cartoony and plasticky  and the ''SONTAR-HA'' football chant is f*cking stupid but he's at least the only NuWho Sontaran who feels like a proper threat and not played for a complete pisstake. 

Strax: He was slightly amusing at first but like most NuWho jokes, gradually became more annoying.

Well Kevin Lindsay's Sontarans are the absolute best overall. The Time Warrior is an absolute classic, and a large part of that is his performance. Also the make up for Linx is still one of the most effective in the entire run of DW.

The other classic era Sontarans, sorry were a bit forgettable to me. The cockney one in Invasion of Time was only there for two eps and far too silly, whilst the ones in the Two Doctors did nothing and got undermined badly by the Androgums.

The new who Sontarans in the RTD and Moff era were quite good. I like Christopher Ryan's Sontaran commander. He had a great voice for it. Shame he wasn't used more often.

The guy playing Strax meanwhile was really, really good. He was hilarious and lovable as Strax, but he does a good villainous Sontaran too. Check him out in The First Sontarans audio. He is actually menacing.

The Jodie ones meanwhile, who cares?
