I've never actually seen a lot of this version other than a fan-edited 'movie' a friend of mine made for me, although I own the entire series on DVD (one of the last things I bought out of Woolworths before it closed), but can't find it anywhere right now, so I'm curious as to it's reputation as it's getting a lot of attention again recently for reasons I'll get to in a moment.
The original was produced by Mainframe Entertainment (best known for Reboot, Beast Wars, War Planets and a lot of Barbie movies) and was originally conceived as a follow-up to the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie. It starred Neil Patrick Harris as Peter/Spidey and Lisa Loeb as Mary Jane. It also crossed over with the FOX movie version of Daredevil by including it's version of the Kingpin. The series also used characters like Kraven, Electro, Silver Sable, and several original villains and allies, including a unique character, a tech nerd called Indy who becomes a close interest of Peter.
It was cancelled within the span of a year, but developed over time a big cult following amongst the kids of the noughties who grew up with the Raimi movies, to the point now there are at least two efforts by groups of talented animators, writers, and actors to create an unofficial revival of the show to post on Youtube. I don't know how successful they'll ultimately be as their methods require crowd-funding and Marvel may clamp down on them, but I've seen their individual progress and it doesn't look bad at all. Wish I were that skilled for half the things I want to do with dormant properties.
