Tony Blair did lead a transformative government and so probably deserves the honour as much as many recipients (although the whole system of honours is outdated and discredited). Yes, he transformed it for the worst by saddling the NHS with private debt to loan sharks, making higher education unaffordable thereby cutting off social mobility and saddling those who dared venture into it with a lifetime of debt repayment, making zero hour contracts and foodbanks a thing, tearing chunks out the welfare state with sanctions and workfare, overseeing an artificially inflated property price boom whilst building less social housing than Thatcher thereby making rents unaffordable, mortgages an impossibility and stripping younger generations of independent living, and all of that before we even get on to the matter of breaking International Law by launching illegal wars on a disingenuous pretext which murdered over a million innocents. He almost made Thatcher look like Florence Nightingale by comparison, but then again, she was his idol and inspiration. Thatcher considered New Labour her greatest accomplishment. |
