I remember reading in Mark Campbell's "The Complete Guide to Doctor Who" a description of this calibre: "The infamous acid bath scene, in which the Doctor makes a flippant comment after watching two men die, is deeply problematic".
Oh don't get me started on that lousy book. A towering work of idiocy that i've had the misfortune to receive as a gift twice. The prick actually gives Paradise Towers 9/10....
I know. It’s a shite piece of work that posits no proper analysis- just the occasional snide summary. I don't regret giving it away two years back. Paradise Towers gets a 9/10, yet Dalek Invasion of Earth gets a 4/10. Actually, come to think of it, the prat also gave Spearhead From Space a 4/10, The Invasion a 5/10, Power of the Daleks a 7/10 (citing it as “above average”), and resorted to scoring Attack of the Cybermen a 3/10 on the grounds of “needless violence”.
I guess he scored New Earth a 1/10, which is something…
Are we seriously ruling out the possibility of Tom Baker making a flippant remark after such a moment of abject black comedy? Because that's precisely what he *would* do
But then, they don't watch it. Which is why Peter Davidson is so famous.
Yep- and in Colin’s case, he’s surrounded by four Cybermen in an enclosed room who happen to be very quickly closing in. In Davison’s case, the Cyber Leader is already incapacitated and wounded by Adric’s badge. Not only is Davison’s exertion of violence more callous, but Colin’s Doctor has no choice but to fire back, because he’s dealing with an infinitely stronger set of opponents with no alternative course to pursue.
