I've always enjoyed the first season. It's definitely not as strong as the later 3, but watching Edmund as a slimy runner up prince who's constant attempts to gain power fail miserably is very amusing.
This was also my first proper introduction to Brian Blessed, who plays a kill crazy king a little to perfectly.

My favourite ever exchange is in Blackadder 4 when Baldrick and Blackadder are in prison.
Baldrick: I want my mum.
Blackadder: Yes it would be good to see her, a maternally enraged gorilla would be quite a useful ally when it comes to a scrap.
LMFAO. Even in that situation he is still going to insult not only Baldrick but his family too. To be fair to Blackadder according to some spin off material Baldrick's family tree at certain points includes literal pig shit, so I suppose a gorilla is a step up.

This was also my first proper introduction to Brian Blessed, who plays a kill crazy king a little to perfectly. I felt it had the best balanced cast. Blackadder's the ambitious one, Baldrick's the smart one, Percy's the kindly one. They all complement each other really well and have a nice camaraderie as a trio of underdogs. Plus, Edmund being so close to the throne gives his scheming a certain kind of immediacy that's lacking in the sequels.

Mine's this from General Melchett: "You know, if there's one thing I've learnt from being in the Army, it's never ignore a pooh-pooh. I knew a Major, who got pooh-poohed, made the mistake of ignoring the pooh-pooh. He pooh-poohed it! Fatal error! 'Cos it turned out all along that the soldier who pooh-poohed him had been pooh-poohing a lot of other officers who pooh-poohed their pooh-poohs. In the end, we had to disband the regiment. Morale totally destroyed... by pooh-pooh"

It's not that Rowan wasn't impressed with Tom, he was very insecure about being completely upstaged by him in his own show!

Fair enough, it's a shame though as the two make a good comedy duo in their one main scene. A part of me has always wondered if Tom was maybe telling tall stories in regards to his relationship with Rowan. I'm just saying Rowan doesn't seem like the type to mind being upstaged by guests? Look at Rik Mayall as Lord Flasheart who he brought back twice afterwards? Brian Blessed in the first series, and Frank Finlay and Peter Cook? Adrian Edmondson as the Baron Von Richthoven? Robbie Coltrane as Doctor Johnson? Stephen Fry as General Melchett and the Duke of Wellington? Miranda Richardson as Queenie and Amy in series 3? Hugh Laurie as both Ludwig and the Prince? Mirium Margoyles as Lady White Adder? Hell even Nicola Bryant's character in the Christmas Special? They all have more over the top, insane, colourful characters than Rowans. He's kind of the straight man. A witty straight man, but the straight man nonetheless. He even said he preferred making Blackadder because unlike Mr Bean the pressure to be funny wasn't entirely on him and he could leave it up to his co-stars. With this in mind it sounds odd that he would be intimidated by Tom Baker hamming it up? Indeed why else would you get Tom Baker to play that role as a mad captain in the first place? I think it's probably that Tom and Rowan didn't like each other for whatever reason, maybe Rowan was a bit of an arrogant git, or maybe Tom was still his usual difficult self at that point, maybe both LOL, but either way I think Tom has exaggerated it a bit. He does tend to do that, like his story about meeting a woman he had no idea he had married, or someone vandalizing his grave stone haha.

That story wasn't from Tom I don't think, it was from others that worked on Blackadder.

That story wasn't from Tom I don't think, it was from others that worked on Blackadder. No it definitely was from Tom, I've seen him go over it. I'll see if I can find the interview. He gave it just after the 50th. I think that's also when he talks about how badly he was treated on the set of the 50th and he also mentions at one point rather morbidly that he doesn't expect to live much longer. Well here he is ten years on. He also mentions that his favourite Master is Roger Delgado which I was really shocked to see as he normally never mentions anything about the other Doctors eras. It's a great interview overall.

Got the whole lot on Blu ray. Not too bad, but the Who sets are much more detailed. I like the colours but III in particular looks like someone has fiddled with the brightness. Got the usual "reflects the attitudes of the time" bollocks at the bottom of the box despite the fact that the language reflects the attitudes of the times the show is set in rather than the 1980s. Even the 2008 behind the scenes material is included in that! I can't wait till they slap that on Russell's work.

Got "The Whole Damn Dynasty" scripts on Amazon. I've experienced the episodes on television as well as audio-only recordings so now I'm going to see how well they translate on the page without the actors.

There's also an interview where he talks about Pertwee. "I only met Jon Pertwee for the first time at the changeover shot in his last episode. So up till then I had no knowledge of him. Later I met him in various sound studios where we doing voice overs or commentaries and so on. Also I met him on several occasions at Sci-fi conventions. He was always very glamorous and charismatic and he obviously felt I was a bit peculiar. I used to tease him by pretending I was earning huge fees. This made him pink up a bit. But he was the generation ahead of me so there was a gap too wide for us to become friends. But I respected him and greatly admired his Worzel Gummidge series. I was sorry to hear of his death although envious of the manner (he died in his sleep). He did not know the fear of dying”.

Here's the full interview where he talks about Rowan, Roger Delgado and such at different points. He talks about Blackadder fairly early on about 1:48 seconds in.

"Security isn't a dirty word, Blackadder. Crevice is a dirty word, but security isn't."
