This an old article, but I remember reading it before and thinking it was a big pile of shite. www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/5-reasons-why-rose-tyler-is-the-shows-best-companion-ever/"Whereas most classic Who companions’ big red “This is Your Life” books would be virtually empty, RTD ensured that Rose Tyler would have a life before The Doctor came into it; complete with job, boyfriend, and amorous mother. Who finally had a realistic representation of a teenage girl, unlike previous characters that looked like they’d strolled straight out of the Beano" What a bag of absolute piss. Ace was fully fleshed out. We got hints of her life before she met the Doctor. We met her friends in Survival, knew that she hated her mother, met her nan in Fenric, knew how she got to Iceworld in the first place and her love for explosives. Hell, we even got to find out what she did when she was in her early teens (Ghost Light). She had a job as a waitress too. Fine, she didn't have a boyfriend but then she met men and women alike on her travels. What I'm trying to say is that Ace had a life before the Doctor came into it. Fine, we found out about a lot of the stuff later on, but still. Yet again RTD gets credit for something 80s Who did. Up yours. Fokk it all.

Relentlessly condescending. "Whereas most classic Who companions’ big red “This is Your Life” books would be virtually empty..." "In the same way that most classic companions showed no signs of having a past..." "This cost us one Christopher Eccleston, but gained us one of the most loyal companions the Doctor would ever have." Yes, we know how much you love yourselves, and how much better you are than your predecessors. Congratulations. Why are none of these people remotely capable of entertaining the concept of "Less is more"? Would the end of Daleks' Masterplan be improved if Sara Kingdom miraculously transformed into the Bad Wolf deity and brought everyone back to life? No- it'd be crap, and completely unsuitable. Deifying a single character out of self-love is one of the most ill-advised means of scripting a character, yet the NuWho production team constantly do this and view themselves as geniuses for it.

Adric, Tegan and Nyssa ALL had backstories with family before meeting the Doctor, indeed so too did Turlough. Utter nonsense. What about Victoria? Or indeed Sarah Jane Smith? Most companions entrance stories were one big huge bloody backstory, what a load of utter drivel. They all mostly had family, jobs and a life prior to meeting the Doctor. Rose was just a brain dead chav, she might as well have been lacking a backstory because the one she had was so tedious and boring. Why do NuPooh lovers write such dismissive and ill-informed crap about the Classic Series?

And it had far more time to expand on them over a 7 episode duration followed by a full season with Victoria herself. It's a ridiculously selective article.

Why do NuPooh lovers write such dismissive and ill-informed crap about the Classic Series? Also not forgetting Vicki. The Rescue was nothing other than a character piece. David Whitaker penned both that story and Evil of the Daleks. A far better character writer than RTD, and infinitely more versatile. Vicki and Victoria (despite possessing similar names) are absolutely nothing alike either in backstory or character, one being a timid and pampered Victorian girl, the other being a confident and tech savvy teenager from the future. Meanwhile, Rose, Martha and Donna all adhere to the same character template.

You expect the Radio Times to talk sense? The same folk who think that The Faceless Ones is 3 stars at best and Orphan 55 is an 5 star classic, who think the Chameleons are tacky 60s crap yet Barlow's sister and Jay in a green wig are cack-your-pants-terrifying. The same folk who think that Ainley was too camp and panto and that Dawhan giggling and acting like a demented seal is gravitas and inspired Attachments:faceless1.webp (225.71 KB)

Orphan 55 got five stars? Seriously? Have they ever criticised NuWho before in any shape or form?

Still, that one act alone doesn't detract from 16 years of arse licking.

Maybe the writer wasn't paying attention during Full Circle, The Keeper Of Traken and Logopolis when the companions' backstory was ACTUALLY HAPPENING ONSCREEN! And I don't remember the old companions having so little scope for development that their actors got brought back to play a flirty Tardis instead.

It's the same shite that spews over EVERYTHING today in the media. Everything that's new and shiny is so much better than those old things made by those old racist sexists etc. Except it's all shit and so are they.

Revisionist drivel in its purest form. We’ve got the bbc and self hating, gate keeping fans like the Fitzroy Crowed to thank for this rubbish being so deep set in the fandom, like parasites in an infected wound.
