🤣 Anyone old enough to remember David Cassidy will realise how spot-on Paul is. 😆 But to be fair, Tennant was only the monkey, not the organ grinder.

I don't know David Cassidy, but his father was a brilliant Columbo villain

We were honestly robbed. I loved McGann.
He has revealed he's never actually met RTD which is probably something he shouldn't be too upset about. What bothers me is that Russell never took him out for a drink or something to tell him that they were starting afresh and thus wouldn't be needing him for the 2005 series. That's the least he could have done but then class isn't a quality inherited by NuWho associates.

The TV movie was nine years ago, and this was long before legacy sequels became a big fad. As far as anyone was concerned, the TV movie was just a pilot that didn't take off. Nobody was certain it was even canon until Human Nature. If anything, they did him a favor by including it in the official timeline.

Nobody was certain it was even canon until Human Nature. The Bond producers did the same with Timothy Dalton even though he declined so why wouldn't he? Can you imagine if they just ghosted Dalton and hired Brosnan. It shows a lack of class. McGann was basically swept under the carpet. Even a phone call, which he was waiting for, would have been nice. Russell contacted India Fisher telling her he loved Charley so there really is no excuse why he didn't get in touch with McGann.

The Movie was always canon. The Doctor remarks in School Reunion that he's regenerated "half a dozen" times since he last met Sarah confirming he's the 10th Doctor and that the 8th Doctor happened.

James Bond is a blockbuster movie series. Doctor Who is a television show. They're entirely different beasts. And that's without mentioning that every Bond transitioned neatly from the previous one, whereas McGann's film was years after the original show had concluded, and years before the next one started. His little moment in the franchise's history came and went, and was long gone by 2005. They were not obliged to him in any way.

They weren't obliged to McCoy either after seven years, but the production team still fought the BBC in making sure he was in it. Even JNT sat down and had a nice chat with Dudley Simpson before letting him known that his services were no longer required. It's all about decency of which Russell has none.

There are so many instances of this. Peter Weller met up with Fred Dekker to politely tell him that he was too busy to star in his RoboCop movie. There are no obligations, but there should be respect in the industry.

Dudley was *still* employed at the time. And given that one of the main criticisms of the TV movie is that they wasted time on McCoy, well, that doesn't say much, does it? They brought him in because they were nerds about it.
It's nice from a fan perspective, and I'm certainly not unhappy to see him, but it wasn't necessary for the film. It wouldn't have reflected poorly on them at all if they just started from McGann, nor does it reflect poorly on Russell that he chose to kick off with Eccleston and move on. Unless they're big movie stars, actors have no claim on the role literally more than a decade after they've stopped playing the part. It's ridiculous.

Paul McGann was *still* the official Doctor at the time as was McCoy before the movie. It would have been nice for Russell to at least phone him or email him and say "the role is being passed on to someone else. This decision is made for the future of the show and fits with my vision of where I want to take it. All the best, Paul." He could have added a little kiss if he wanted rather than just blank him completely. McGann clearly thinks similarly to me if he was waiting for a phone call in the first place.
