Timeless Child sucks but I find it hard to hate RTD for actually following continuity. It's not like the episode made a big deal out of it. It was a few throwaway lines. The obvious way to offer an olive branch to a disillusioned and sceptical fanbase would have been not to mention it at all. There's a difference between not contradicting established continuity (not that he's ever had any qualms about shitting all over classic series continuity) and actively drawing attention to it. Imagine if the first four episodes of Series 1 featured Eccleston stopping at random moments to remind the audience that he's half-human on his mother's side. RTD never explicitly retconned out the "half-human" idea, but his approach in light of the widespread fan backlash was "let's just never mention that on screen again and leave Big Finish to explain it away". Had he gone out of his way to draw attention to it, there would have been no other way to interpret his decision than as a middle finger to the fans - which is exactly what this was. It didn't declare the Doctor gay, though. He just said Newton looked attractive. If I say Tennant is hot, does that automatically mean I'd date him? - Neil Patrick Harris |
