Anybody see the docu RTD made about himself last night? It's so telling that for the 50th, Moffat for all his faults, gave us An Adventure in Space in Time to celebrate the start of the show, and let Peter Davison do something to celebrate Classic and New Who, whilst RTD's docu for the 60th is "Doctor Who and Me" about its impact on his life.
I didn't see it, but I bet most of it was about how he's gay and how that gave him a better understanding of the show than any straight man, (same way being a gay man allowed him to write better female characters.)
God he's so f*cking tedious. He should have done Heat Magazine and me instead.

" Davies has always plundered his past for ideas. As he says: “There’s not the writer and then me. There’s just me. All of my life connects to the writing. All of it.” "
We know, Russell. We know.

God he's so f*cking tedious. He should have done Heat Magazine and me instead. I just finished watching it, there's not much new ground to cover in it, there's already been three or fours docus made about him over the years, and even Yentob doesn't really say much of anything in it. Russel leads most of the doc and has a nice chat with Sally Wainwright. As usual, we get archive clips of his Playschool performance (I love how Russel insists his place isn't in front of the camera, yet all he ever does is get in front of it) , we have clips from Dark Season, his stint on Why Don't You? , Coronation Street, The Grand, etc...but sadly there's no footage of Children's Ward or Breakfast Serials (Nice Chap in particular is probably his most obscure work )
Russel reads a couple of his scripts aloud to a bored Yentob. Also says he was the right queer man to write "A Very English Scandal", because that whole thing had been documented exclusively by straight men who couldn't process what went on in the heads of those involved. Russel's partner Andrew and his struggle with the brain tumour is brought up, but Russel is quite jovial about the whole thing, never showing much in the way of an alternative emotion.

God that way of thinking always makes me laugh, that you have to be part of a minority to properly write for them. It's just so limited and boring and not true in the slightest. Again I think Russell writes crap gay characters for the most part, because he sees them through his limited lens of the gay Manchester scene in the 1980s. The day he'd write a gay character like Captain Holt from Brooklyn 99 (may his actor rest in peace) I'd be amazed. Meanwhile what happened to Andrew was absolutely horrific. I actually found it quite an inspiring story though in that the poor guy was diagnosed in like 2011 and given just a few months left to live, yet he managed to live for almost another 10 years and even got married in that time! I don't blame RTD for not talking about that as it was horrific, but still that aside, whilst my sympathy goes out to Russell there, the guy needs to keep his ego in check. I mean I'm not really annoyed given that I don't care about DW's current canon, and if anything I'm happy that I didn't see Sophie, Colin, Peter, Benton etc dragged in for more pointless cameos to prop up the latest stupid retcon, but when you think about it to the people who do actually still care and see it as one show, the 60th anniversary has been an absolute f*cking joke. 3 specials that were NOTHING but celebrations of RTD's era and making out his companion Donna was the Doctors all time best friend, vandalisation of one of the greatest villains in the shows history via Davros, and a docu going on about how great Russell is. It's sad that a comic story Liberation of the Daleks ended up being an absolutely fantastic anniversary story instead. If only that had been made as a feature length story I'd have been happy. Of course some might say "oh no we had TARDIS Tales so that was a great celebration" but it wasn't. TARDIS Tales are no different to special features you'd have got on a DVD release in the 00s.

My God, what a crushing narcissistic bore. Jesus, he's Captain Cook. All he ever talks about is himself. f*ck me Greatest Show had an almost supernatural ability to see the future. DW is parodied with an egomaniac that people think is great at first, based on his bullshit until they get to know him and then returns after his time is up as an undead caricature of his already obnoxious self, to try and peddle his bullshit again until he falls into a deep hole (RTD/Captain Cook) with the person who works closest with him viewing him as a piece of shit (Mags/Eccelston) and there is an obnoxious little prick who thinks he can do a better job and ends up failing spectacularly. (Chibbers/Whizz Kid.)
