I predicted he was going to be woefully out of touch and he seems to have proved me right already. It's not the 2000s anymore, Rusty. It's ironic because the McCoy era that according to the same mainstream critics and media whores who are praising RTD, was an old relic that needed put out to pasture. In reality it was ahead of its time. It was tapping into the fantasy, supernatural genres which would soon come to dominate tv over sci fi in the 90s and 00s. Buffy, Angel, Xena, Hercules, Charmed, Supernatural, Ghost Whisperer, even in Britain, Merlin and Being Human. RTD meanwhile is just trying to recapture the zeitgeist from 15 years ago. Shows you what hype and bullshit can do.

That "British bombs killing German children" speech in Fenric which completely shatters a religious man's faith is arguably one of the best written scenes in the show.

That "British bombs killing German children" speech in Fenric which completely shatters a religious man's faith is arguably one of the best written scenes in the show. It certainly is. Also talk about politics? That was decades ahead of its time. What we did in Dresden was an atrocity. It did NOT help us win the war at all, in fact it set back our recovery having to help rebuild. In spite of that propaganda not only still says it was necessary, but it gets used to justify other atrocities, like the genocide in Palestine. Media whores and war mongers like James O'Brien and James Whale frequently bring up Dresden as proof that sometimes civilian casualties are worth it. For Fenric to burst that bubble back in 1989 was quite incredible and again, small wonder the BBC not only canned it, but would spend the next 14 years trying to make its name mud. Meanwhile for idiots like Mr Tardis to try and compare a story that tackles a subject like that and still manages to wrap it up in a fresh, frightening take on vampires, as being in any way comparable to twee, unimaginative upper middle class shit like Kerblam or "ooooooh Rosa Parks saved black people because Bill Clinton gave her an award." Or RTD painfully trying to get down with the kids by having a trans character insult men, is deeply depressing.

To be fair I found Moffat trying to get down with the kids much more grating and embarrassing. The Doctor wearing hoodies and playing guitar, the horrible selfie gags, emojis, those awful browser history jokes which are funnily enough present in both Moffat's first and last episodes - Eleventh Hour and Twice Upon a Time. RTD at least understood what made a character or a situation relatable to kids rather than jangling a bunch of trendy keys at them.

He was the original and it annoys me that people let him away with a lot of that crap in hindsight. My very good friends the other day just would not accept that any pandering to SJW stuff happened in the Capaldi era, insisting it was only when Moffat left. I don't know how they could think that, but they are my friends so I didn't push it. Like I said in that post about the downfall of New Who, series 9 failed across the board because sadly Moff tried to please everybody. He overloaded it with pointless classic who references to please us, but at the same time he also crowbarred in as much woke crap as he could, and in the end he pissed everybody off as the woke stuff was painfully done, with the not all Zygons speech and the references were botched too.

IIRC the guitar thing (as well as the Sonic Shades) were all Capaldi's idea, the former because he is himself a keen guitar player.

Just because the lead actor suggests something doesn't mean it's a good idea. Remember Troughton wanting to black up and wear a turban for his Doctor.

I heard the guitar was Moffat's idea (presumably based on his knowledge of Capaldi's IRL abilities), and that Capaldi felt uncertain about it but was eventually convinced to go along

Also remember Tom suggesting the companion be a cabage LOL. I remember a lot of people saying that would have been preferrable to Clara LOL. I have a lot of affection for Clara though because Jenna Coleman reminds me so much of Claudia Boleyn now. Physically and in terms of her mannerisms (though Claudia is soooooo much prettier), but yeah Clara's character was kind of crappy in season 8. At least the cabbage wouldn't have slapped Capaldi. I also recall Tom never wanting the Doctor to ever do any fighting or kill his enemies and ironically he ended up becoming the best fighter of all the Doctors after Pertwee and probably the most violent in terms of killing the badguys too. He was certainly the biggest gun nut of all the Doctors.

Capaldi seems a nice fella and I like a lot of his ideas about how the Doctor should be played, but those scenes of him knocking out riffs on an electric guitar are amongst the most desperately embarrassing in the show's history. What were they thinking? Is it because Matt Smith got to play footie in The Lodger? Maybe there was a tradition, where Doctor Who actors are encouraged to demonstrate some old skill from a previous hobby or job. I would have liked to have seen a story where Tom Baker gets to lay some bricks or mix a bit of cement....

a bi-regeneration version of The War Games where Troughton settles down with another family.

Some desperate spin going on with the fiddled figures, apparently, according to Twitter. Seems they're now counting figures for 11 days while pretending they're for 7. They are f*cking desperate. link

Oh I know, but the fact that they're even cheating the fiddled figures says they know full well this is falling on its ass.
