Ok so I'v been watching the recent Ultraman series, Ultraman Blazar, and one episode really struck me in comparison to shows like nuwho.
Episode 9: Planet of Music is a giant tribute to the original ultra show Ultra Q. It brings back one of it's most iconic aliens and monsters, not just for the sake of fanservice but to tell a good story also.
First off this is the original Ultra Q theme and clips of Garamon, a giant robot kaiju who appeared two episodes of the show. Ultra Q was basically a giant monster themed twilight zone style series that was not only strange and thought provoking, but pushed the boundaries of Japanese television programming in an attempt to emulate the effects of the giant monster movies of the time. The first episode tells of a strange giant robot appearing and attacking japan, the second, which didn't occur until several episodes later, had a full scale invasion.
And this is Garamon, 57 years later, fighting the heroes to an orchestral version of the the Ultra Q theme played by the actual actors who are playing the Alien's controlling the robot monster. This time the story revolves around a group of aliens who came to conquer earth, but upon discovering music they grew to love the planet and have actually subtle sabotaged their invasion plan in the hope that the heroes will stop them.
No attempts to revamp for a modern audience. The creators fully embraces the strange tone of the shows progenitor to tell a very touching story about music... that also features an alien invasion and giant monster battles.
Could you ever imagine nuwho ever doing this now. Not just brining back an old monster to a T but also actually trying to replicate the spirit of older episodes?
