I've talked a bit about her on other threads, but I feel she deserves one. She is honestly one of the best singer/song writers of the entire twentieth century. She definitely needs more praise and attention.
This is her masterpiece. People often overlook the point of the song, that it shows how cold and cruel people can be in relation to others problems, the way they're so casual about Billy Joe's death, with the dad even calling him an idiot. Honestly in the age of social media where we see edge lords try and show how they're not sheep by being similarly callous to celebrity and public deaths, and in an age where the disabled and people with mental health problems are often dismissed as faking it, or attention whores and people are indifferent to their suffering, I'd say this song is even more relevant.
Like I said however that message is often overlooked in favour of the mystery of what was thrown off the bridge, which is obviously interesting, but only part of this incredible story Bobbie weaved with this thoughtful and poignant song.
Personally I go with the most popular interpretation, that Bobbie and Billy had a baby that was still born out of wedlock, and threw its remains over the bridge to avoid being caught, which later caused him to commit suicide, and Bobbie plants flowers there both for him and her child. Still given the era and place the story is set of the south, it could be many things. IE they could be an interracial couple, or Billy Joe could be a gay man struggling with his sexuality (this was what they went with in the film version, which I haven't seen yet.)
Here it is.
When you think this came out at the same time as the Beatles at their peak, DW, Star Trek, the Prisoner, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors etc. It's no wonder the 60s still dominates popular culture in a way no decade has ever been able too.
Here are some other covers and songs she's done.
My favourite version of this song. I'm not surprised she feels that way about love after Billy Joe LMAO.
Any other fans of hers here? If so what did you think she was throwing off the bridge LOL.
A lot of people said they think she wasted her talent by quitting in the 80s. I can understand that, but honestly maybe that's for the best as there are lots of musicians who just keep going on and on and end up doing embarrassing things to stay relevant like Paul McCartney doing a duet with Kanye West. Bobbie from the sounds of things has just gone off and had a nice life after making her money. I wish Amy had done that.
