Season 17 is gorgeous. Probably my favourite season pre McCoy.

I love Shada (the 2017 version). It's my favourite Tom Baker story. Horns of Nimon is good fun.
The rest... I don't wanna talk about.

He's not wrong though (even though I slightly prefer 16 these days). He'll change his mind by next week anyway.

I don't know why Classic fans are so averse to 4 and Sarah, who are obviously the best pairing. And yeah honestly Baker's performance alone does bring him up in the ranking a ton considering 4 of his 7 seasons are some of the worst in the show's history. Talons of Weng Chiang is the last gasp of greatness before Doctor Who died. I hold that 6 and 7 had some great stories but even then it was never the same. I like Sarah a lot. For a time as a child she was my favourite in more ways than one if you get my meaning. However I think that Ace, Romana, Barbara, Leela, Liz and Jamie were all probably better companions, as Sarah became a bit generic with Tom. I actually prefer her sassy, Lois Lane persona in season 11 (she probably has the best intro of any companion in the Time Warrior for instance, being useful and hilarious and able to put up with Pertwee's shit at the same time.) However sadly they seemed to dump the Lois Lane journalist aspect after Robot. Granted it was hard to keep that up when she's going into space and other planets. In many ways she was written for Pertwee the earth bound Doctor. They don't make her into a wimp or a load or anything like JNT did to Peri after the promising start in Planet of Fire. Still she is just kind of there. The great irony is that her chemistry with Tom is so much better than it was with Pertwee as they seemed to like each other off set more, but by that stage her character has become more generic. Ace on the other hand was more well developed, whilst Leela, Jamie, Barbara and Liz always remained a stronger, more distinct presence. They really hit the ground running with all of them, whilst Romana actually had in hindsight quite a good arc too. In terms of chemistry meanwhile I think the actors for Ace, Jamie, Jo and Romana were all just as strong with their Doctors, but their relationships were also a bit more distinct and defined than Sarah's was with 4. Sarah and 4 are just friends. Some have even read a romantic reading into it, which I thought for a while on last rewatch, but now yeah I don't think so. I think they are just friends, which is okay, but Ace has the surrogate, troublesome daughter relationship, as well as his curiosity in finding out why she ended up in Ice World, which can allow for some shades of grey where he's a bit more of a dubious, manipulative bastard with her. Jamie has that kind of troublesome, little brother thing going on, in both cases it's funny because you think the Doctor who is a stuffy grandfather figure will put Ace and Jamie on the straight and narrow, but actually both are led even more astray by the Doctor LOL. Jo is very much the sweet daughter figure meanwhile, whilst Leela is a good foil because she's so different, but they both kind of need each other to balance them out, and finally Romana being a time lady who has the same heritage as he does and who can therefore have a deeper connection with him (one that is possibly romantic) again is just much more interesting than a modern earth girl who is his friend dynamic that Sarah has. Meanwhile in no way are 4 of Tom's the worst seasons of classic who. I'd say the worst seasons of classic who are probably. Season 23 Season 24 To be fair after that the next candidates in line would have be seasons 17, 18, 4, 11 and 9. All of those seasons DO have unbelievable stinkers in them like Nimon, The Leisure Hive, The Mutants, Invasion of the Dinosaurs, Creature from the Pit. However they all have some classics like Power of the Daleks, Death to the Daleks, Day of the Daleks, Curse of Peladon, The Time Warrior, City of Death, State of Decay, Traken, Warriors Gate, etc are all among the best, most creative and interesting stories they ever did, so I'd call those mixed bag seasons. To me the only truly terrible seasons are those two 80s seasons where sadly there isn't apart from the Ultimate Foe a single good story at all. Death to the Daleks is only a classic in your mind, Burrunjor Creature isn't a turkey either. It has the best jungle set of the series and Myra Frances is awesome as the villain. I know Tom blows on a giant green penis, but different strokes for different folks is what I say to that.

Neither is Curse of Peladon or Keeper of Traken.

those two are brilliant. Make City of Death look like the Space Pirates I watched City of Death not that long ago and I honestly want to watch it again. Magical television. I might read the novelization at some point.

Image of the Fendahl is easily top 10 worst. Boucher cannot handle a story longer than 45 minutes. I know - I've read his book. It's sprawling hackneyed nonsense. He was great for Blake's 7, but I cannot abide by any of his Doctor Who work. No, not that one either. XD But yeah, Image in particular is just awful. He just makes it up as he goes along, and none of it amounts to anything. I don't care if it has a cool atmosphere or mrs Tyler, it's a trainwreck. "Boucher cannot handle a story longer than 45 minutes" "Well, er, most Blake's 7 episodes are slightly longer than 45 minutes so you're technically wrong"

Lol.
To be honest, aside from his script editing job, I barely like Boucher's work even in B7. Not that he hasn't written great episodes, but just his overall style isn't my favourite. All his episodes rely heavily on the audience liking them enough to be willing to go along with complete non sequiturs until he finally bothers to explain what's going on in the last 5-10 minutes.
And in some cases, what's going on is absolute nonsense ("City at the Edge of the World"), which renders the previous forty-odd minutes worthless.

Pertwee, but I'd probably wouldn't argue with any of the first four. All mesmeric performances. Of he eighties docs, I'd go with Colin Baker. Theatrical is a compliment, not an insult.

I just needed him to tone it down a little. Paul Darrow was extremely theatrical too, but he kept it quiet at times and you knew shit hit the fan when he reached that crescendo. Colin pretty much bellows every other line and it gets annoying. He's better in season 23 though (and presumably the audios, though I've not listened to many).

Colin was not better in 23. He gives his worst performance in Mindwarp and most of the time the character he plays barely resembles the kick ass, take no nonsense Doctor from the previous season.
