I know he's old news, but I don't care. I've always hated this smug, preening, arrogant, nasty, cowardly, backstabbing, rat hearted, slimy little c*nt.
Paul Merton for those of you who don't know is a third rate panel show comedian who sums up everything I despise about the genre. He appears on Have I Got News For You and used to host Room 101. (He is the c*nt who put DW in at the behest of Michael Grade. )
Now Paul Merton is a deeply unfunny, annoying little shit. His humour is lame, he has no timing, he interrupts other panelists all the time, drags the arse out of jokes and his deadpan "I'm too good to laugh at my own joke" delivery adds an unpleasant air of smugness to him.
He also has a pathetic competitive edge to him in the show. He is so desperate to win all the time, he interrupts other contestants answers and goes in a huff when Ian wins. I remember Jonathan Ross (who funnily enough was never asked back after this episode,) even saying to him "Why the f*ck do you care so much? It's only supposed to be a bit of fun!" I'm paraphrasing it a bit, but it was along those lines.
Still being a bad comedian wouldn't be enough to make me hate him. He's a nasty piece of work too. Like all panel show comedians, he's a miserable coward who only goes after targets when it's trendy to do so, but is so ridiculously nasty to them, it appears that he is edgy.
His treatment of DW alone shows that. Here we had a show that had been off the air for 13 years, that he kicked into the dirt at the behest of the guy who canned it (in an unprofessional and cowardly way.) And did so by presenting a completely one sided argument too, only showing clips from the worst episodes. I partially blame Paul Merton for the state of current DW, as that unbelievably nasty case of public bullying, and punching down destroyed whatever bit of confidence its fans had left.
However possibly an even worse example of what a nasty little shit Paul Merton is, was when he stabbed Angus Deayton in the back. Angus was the original host of HIGNFY, and apparently Paul always disliked him. No one else knew why? Some have suspected it's because Angus was the most popular one on the show, and also had all the fan girls. (He was even nicknamed tv's mr sex.)
Either way when an ex lover sold stories about Angus having an affair with her and taking drugs. HIGNFY took the piss out of Angus in one episode, which was fair enough as he had after all been merciless in slagging off other people, so it would have been hypocritical to let him off. When another round of stories came out, they fired Angus, and both Paul and Ian pushed for that.
Now I personally don't think that Angus should have been fired. I don't give a shit if he's shagging about. It's very telling that Jimmy Carr who is in with the bricks, didn't get the sack from 8 out of 10 cats, when he was caught fiddling his taxes. BTW that's worse. To me a celeb who moans about and cheats taxes is among the lowest form of life. Certainly more so than a guy who shags about.
Still maybe it would have been too much if more stories kept coming out, but even then the way Paul went about it was vile. Ian who I also dislike at least said that it was nothing personal, that he liked Angus, and that he felt it was just for the good of the show.
Paul however?
He said Angus was dull, boring, an unfunny man, that he never liked him, and that losing him was like losing Zeppo on Parkinson after Angus was fired. Worse later that year Paul and Angus were both up for an award and when Paul won he gloated about it to Angus. Apparently Angus was shocked and deeply hurt by this as he had no idea Paul disliked him. (Something which Ian backed up.)
To me this all shows the kind of man he is. A backstabbing weasel, who goes along with who the media tell him to hate to such an extent that he will bully and ruin a man he has worked with for 13 years, if he runs foul of them, as well as a jealous little bitch.
I would actually like to meet him, just so I could let him know what a c*nt he is to his face. He strikes me for all his bullshit about being working class as the type of guy that desperately needs a punch in the face to make him a decent person.
